One of the biggest misconceptions about walking the spiritual path is that, once you start down the road of self-awakening, you'll never have another negative experience again. Life will be nothing but peace and sunshine. You’ll never again have to experience fear, worry, doubt, or anger. After all, you’re meditating, praying, aligning your chakras, rocking your asana, and drinking your juice. You’ve got it all figured out.
I hate to break it to you, boo. It doesn’t work like that (as much as I wish it did).
The truth of the matter is you will continue to have off days. There will be days where you wake up on the wrong side of the morning, as my grandma would say. There will be days where you want to yank your co-workers and where traffic makes you want to pull your hair out. There will be unexpected bills and lay-offs at work. There will be sickness and there will be death.
I don’t say all of this to frighten or overwhelm you. I’m just a firm believer in keeping it real.
Lately I’ve been having a string of off days, where my attitude has just been plain shitty. I am not the best version of myself and I am not practicing what I preach. I am angry, fearful, and full of worry. I have been expecting the worst out of life and out of the people around me. Peace has been out of town on vacation and left me alone to my own devices. It hasn't been a pretty picture, let me tell ya.
Why am I telling you this?
I want you to know that you are not alone in your daily struggles. The people that you think have it all figured out are just like you — they are doing the best they can. They may not admit their struggles openly to anyone, but the truth of the matter is we are all facing something.
You may not have much control over the circumstances of your life. However, you always have control over what you think about those circumstances and how you choose to proceed.
Even if you start off on the wrong foot, you have the chance to begin again and align yourself with the power of love.
That’s it? Yes, that’s it. Sounds simple, right? Believe me when I say that simplicity ain’t so simple. In fact, you’ll find that it’s downright difficult.
Don’t get bummed out if you try the above method a couple of times and it doesn’t work for you. Consistency is the key. It’s a lot like lifting weights. You only get stronger by staying with it. It’s not realistic to think that this is a one and done deal. You’ve got to stick with it, doing however many repetitions you need on that particular day.
You’ll find yourself getting stronger with time. I had to remind myself of this, so I am sharing with you, in case you needed the reminder, too.
